Carpet Shop

Established in 1988, AKCCCD carpet factory shop employs 80 local women from the surrounding area and provides training in craftsmanship and the opportunity to lift themselves and their families out of poverty to become productive and self-supporting citizens. Our objective is not only to provide regular income to the craftswomen but also to preserve the unique culture of Ethiopian carpet weaving.

About our Ethiopian Carpets

Two types of carpets/rugs are available from Ethiopia; knotted and woven.
All our carpets are handmade from the wool of the fat-tailed sheep of the Ethiopian highlands.
The wool is hand spun, and is washed and sun-dried before weaving.

The woven carpets are of varied, beautiful traditional designs using plied yarn and only the natural colours are used.

 Woven Carpets

These carpets are of 100% wool with a 2-ply warp and 3-ply weft. The carpets are ethnic and traditional. The weight is approx, 2.4Kg per sq. meter.

Knotted Carpets

These knotted carpets are produced with a woollen weft on a 20-ply cotton warp. There are 18 rows of warp per 10cm and 180 knots per 10 sq.cm The thickness of the carpet is approx. 1.5cm & the weight is approx 5.5 kg. per sq.metre.

Because our carpets are exclusively hand-made, no two products are ever exactly identical. As such, they make ideal gifts.
