Community sanitation team - AKCCCD, Addis Ababa, EthiopiaCommunity sanitation team - AKCCCD, Addis Ababa, EthiopiaMost of Ethiopia suffers from poor sanitation facilities and some residents do not have access to clean drinking water.

In Arat Kilo, Addis Ababa where overcrowding further aggravates a general lack of sanitation, the community has focused on constructing public pit latrines, showers, and sewage pipelines to reduce the risk of disease. By collecting a fee from all users to maintain the facilities the community has found a sustainable solution to this common problem.

  • Construction of pit latrines and showers
  • Construction of sewage pipelines
  • House renovations/house repairs
  • Monthly soap distribution to sponsored children
  • Establishment of community-led dry waste collectors to clean  up community on regular basis
  • Training and awareness raising on hand washing, importance of hygiene at community level
