Activities: Early Childhood Development (ECD)
In Ethiopia, pre-school is only limited to urban areas for those families that can afford to pay the high fees at private day care centres, leaving no options for early age children from poor families in the towns and rural areas. As a result most of the children in Ethiopia grow up outside daycare or ECCD centres, and are usually looked after by their grandparents or elder siblings who have very limited knowledge of proper childcare practices. The situation is rather worse for those children orphaned or at risk of being orphaned due to HIV/AIDS because they are often stigmatized.
AKCCCD recognizes the influence of the surrounding environment on the child’s development and, through training, aims to build the capacity (Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices) of parents and caregivers, in order to enrich the child’s development. AKCCCD also provides two kindergartens enabling mothers to go out to work.
